People of the Book #13: Riki Moss

After all the academia of yesterday's post, I'm in the mood for something a bit more ethereal today. So, I've jumped forward in my gorgeous Paper book find to the evocative paper sculptures of Riki Moss. These works are from her Studio Glow series. I think what I most love about them is that sense of weightlessness and movement. It's almost cloud-like in its effect. Apparently, it is the light that makes all the difference, illuminating the grained details along pathways within the fibre of the paper. Moss works with Manilla Hemp Abaca paper that has been beaten for up to eight hours. This process creates the contrasting shadow tones that appear on the surface in high relief and create that gorgeously sensuous ripple as they dry and form into these shapes. Many of the articles on her work have likened it to nature, not just in form but also because of its self-created process... eroded sandstone, ribbed under-structures of plants, the curl of a breaking wave. I must admit, I prefer to think of it in terms of wind-billowing fabric :) You can see more of Moss' work on her website here.
